Twinings Leads UK Retail with Accessible QR Codes on Tea Packaging

Twinings, a renowned UK tea and beverage company, has introduced accessible QR (AQR) codes and GS1 Digital Link QR codes across its packaging, becoming the first UK tea brand to implement this technology at scale. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and digital solutions partners Zappar and io.tt, aims to support blind and partially sighted consumers by providing easier access to product information. The accessible QR codes can be scanned with a smartphone to deliver audio descriptions, ingredient lists, and other details, making packaging more inclusive. This move aligns with the broader GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative, which encourages retailers to adopt 2D barcodes capable of carrying more data than traditional linear barcodes. By integrating GS1 Digital Link, Twinings not only enhances accessibility but also prepares for future retail requirements where 2D codes become standard. The rollout covers a wide range of Twinings products, setting a precedent for other UK food and beverage brands to follow. This development underscores the growing importance of 2D barcodes in retail, offering benefits beyond inventory management, such as consumer engagement and accessibility.
Why this matters for your business:

For UK retail and F&B business owners, Twinings' move signals a shift towards inclusive packaging that meets the needs of all consumers, including the 2 million people in the UK with sight loss. Adopting accessible QR codes can enhance brand loyalty and differentiate products in a competitive market. Moreover, the use of GS1 Digital Link prepares businesses for the upcoming Sunrise 2027 deadline, ensuring compliance with future retail standards. This trend also opens opportunities for improved customer engagement through rich product information accessible via smartphone scans.
